Manchester City’s goal difference is now superior to Manchester United’s by seven goals, and they are only two points behind their neighbours at the top of the Barclays Premier League following Saturday’s 6-1 thumping of Norwich City at Carrow Road.

Carlos Tevez scored a hat-trick to make it four goals in two matches while fellow countryman Sergio Aguero bagged a brace with Adam Johnson rounding things off three minutes into injury time. Tevez, who scored on his return to first-team action against West Brom during the week, opened the scoring on 18 minutes – his swerving, dipping shot deceiving home ‘keeper John Ruddy. Less than ten minutes later Aguero doubled the lead as he registered his 20th goal of the season in the top flight, and his 27th in total, burying an absolute pearler past Ruddy from the edge of the box following some sublime link-up play with the irresistable Tevez.

To their credit, Paul Lambert’s charges hit back six minutes into the second-half when substitute Andrew Surman fired a low shot through a crowd of players and Joe Hart in the visitor’s goal. By the time the next goal came to pass 22 minutes had passed and it was Tevez again – the Argentina international nonchalantly nodded past a flailing Ruddy to give Roberto Mancini’s men some breathing space. Three soon became four as Aguero doubled his tally with a superb solo strike, twisting and turning into the area from the left and then curling a shot into the far corner of the net. With ten minutes left to play Tevez completed his hat-trick, profiting from Ryan Bennett’s woeful backpass before Johnson latched onto Gael Clichy’s cross to slot home from close range.
